Olivette Woman Leads RMHC Ride Team in Memory of Cousin

Fifteen years after her mother was given the drug DES to prevent miscarriage, Susan developed uterine cancer as an after-effect of the drug. Soon, Susan began to receive care at Stanford University Medical School in Palo Alto, California—a nearly 11-hour drive from her home in Eugene, Oregon.

Susan’s parents, sisters, and brother attempted to travel back and forth to see Susan during the last three months of her life, often taking the train because Susan’s father worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. Never sure where they would stay each visit, the family wished there was a way to stay close to Susan during her chemotherapy and radiation treatment. It wasn’t until 1979 that the Ronald McDonald House opened in Palo Alto to help keep families close to their seriously-ill children—four years after Susan’s death.

Olivette resident and Susan’s cousin, Lucinda Weaver, will ride in the RMHC Ride on June 19 starting and ending in Forest Park in memory of her cousin so other children’s families can have a place to stay when their child is being treated at a St. Louis hospital.

“Susan's four siblings rarely got to be with her those last few months,” Lucinda said. “For families going through that today, the Ronald McDonald Houses provide an opportunity to keep the families close to their loved ones without adding another financial burden.”

Team Vintage Wheels will hit the road for 100 miles to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities and have already raised more than $2,000 through their online fundraising page at www.firstgiving.com/rmhcridestl.

Professional cyclists and recreational riders alike are invited to the 1st Annual Ronald McDonald House Charities Bike Ride sponsored by St. John’s Mercy Children’s Hospital on Saturday, June 19, 2010. The RMHC Ride has four race options including: 6-mile Fun Ride with Ronald McDonald for families, a 32-mile Fitness Challenge, 62-Mile Metric Century, and 100-mile Century.

Those not interested in participating in the race but still have a heart for helping families with seriously-ill children are encouraged to volunteer at the event. Volunteers are needed at our rest stops, start and finish lines, and ride support locations.

All ride finishers will receive an RMHC Finisher’s Medal upon crossing the finish line celebrating the completed distance. Fundraising awards will also be awarded based on how much each rider raises ranging from an official RMHC Ride jersey to a $500 bike shop voucher.

Food and drink will be available all day along with a bike shop, fitness village, live music, massage tent, kid’s area with fun activities, a finish line party, and beer garden. Ronald McDonald House Thanks Volunteers Like Ruth During Volunteer Appreciation Week

Ruth Noakes’ vibrant personality and quick pace makes it difficult for volunteers half her age to keep up with her.

Every Tuesday morning Ruth waters plants, bags snacks, changes dinner signs, recycles magazines and much more. Ruth likes doing her part to provide a “home-away-from-home” for families of seriously-ill children.

“It’s important to me to provide a comfortable place for families to rest when they leave the hospital,” Ruth said.

Initially Ruth began helping RMHC by bringing breakfast for families at the Ronald McDonald House on West Pine each Saturday morning. She realized a little could go a long way and began bringing baked cookies with her. Soon Ruth began volunteering every Tuesday at the Ronald McDonald House.

Since becoming a house volunteer in 2001 and special events volunteer at Kids and Clays, Ruth said, “I have met many interesting people with similar interests to mine. I believe your donated time can be equally important as sending money.”

Ruth also brings home-cooked meals to families staying at the RMH on West Pine with her church’s dinner group so families have something to eat when they return from the hospital.

Ruth worked in marketing for an insurance company for 18 years and as a stay-at-home mother to her three children before volunteering at RMHC. When she isn’t busy doing for others, she likes to work as an usher at her church, tend to her garden and ride her bike through her Sunset Hills neighborhood of 44 years. She also likes to spend time with her eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and will be expecting another in a few months.

Ruth recently traveled to Louisiana with a local church mission group to help families still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. She painted and installed wood flooring in families’ homes.

“I tell my friends they should volunteer to stay active; if not then they are missing out,” Ruth said.

Mary Brooks started as a volunteer 11 years ago at the Park Avenue Ronald McDonald House, starting by answering the Tab Top Program hotline.

“One little thing evolves into something big,” Mary said.

Mary now coordinates the entire Tab Top Program, works at the registration desk twice a week, volunteers at fundraising auctions and works as a member of the Volunteer Committee.

While Mary is happy to step in and help with any project, her energy and time are mainly invested in the Tab Top Program and Tab Top Pandemonium. She is responsible for distributing collection houses, answering the program’s hotline and coordinating Tab Top Pandemonium.

“She has taken on so much responsibility,” said Alison Kaspar, Volunteer Coordinator for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis. “It’s not often you find someone willing to commit that much time to one organization.”

It’s not only her time that she commits. She brings along her husband, Bob, to help out. Bob Brooks helps out wherever he’s needed and works on special tasks at the Park Avenue House.

The Brooks began their work at the Park Avenue House after seeing a volunteer special on the local news.

“I thought, ‘This fits in with what I do,’” Mary said, since she is a retired nurse.

Mary and her husband began volunteering one day a week for a few hours. Now she works a total of nine hours each week over two days and fills in whenever she’s needed.

Mary works hard for the Park Avenue House, but it’s a labor of love. It’s also simply the right thing to do, she says.

“The pay is great,” Mary said. “It’s a very rewarding.”

As a RMHC volunteer veteran, Mary knows what it takes to be a great volunteer and why others should get involved.

“The satisfaction you get from it just makes you feel like you’re doing something worthwhile,” Brooks said. “When a person is blessed, you have to say thank you. This is how you can do it.”

Volunteer Spotlight: Ronald McDonald Family Room Volunteers Peggy and Dick

Ronald McDonald Family Room Volunteers Peggy Osman and Dick Bylund are familiar faces at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Peggy has been volunteering in the PICU and Dick as a Path Finder at Children’s Hospital many years before the Ronald McDonald Family Room opened its doors at the hospital in 2007.

When the Ronald McDonald Family Room needed volunteers, it seemed like a natural progression for Peggy and Dick to serve as Family Room volunteers.

As a retired second grade teacher whose daughter heads volunteer coordination for Children’s Hospital, Peggy revealed, “The need is so great for these families to get out of their rooms but still stay close to their children.”

The most used place in the Family Room is the kitchen. The ability for families to enjoy a good meal in a calm home-like environment is invaluable to the families who are far from home. Peggy believes that no matter where you volunteer, you will get more out of the experience than you expect.

As a Family Room volunteer, Dick recalls memorable moments from families he has met over the years and their personal stories that have stuck with him, both happy endings and not-so-happy. “I stay here because I enjoy it,” Dick said sincerely. Being a volunteer has been a priceless experience that both Peggy and Dick look forward to every Wednesday in the Family Room.

The Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Louis Children’s Hospital is a special place where family members of hospitalized children can retreat from the stress of the hospital atmosphere without leaving their child. Each Family Room is staffed entirely by the support from volunteers like Peggy and Dick. They offer more than a safe haven from the hospital-like environment, they are a friendly face willing to lend an ear to those in who need someone to listen.

The room includes a full kitchen with snacks and beverages, a living room with comfy chairs, a television and Internet stations, a quiet room for personal downtime, bathrooms with shower facilities, and a laundry room for families to use.

Our three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are in need of individually wrapped, non-perishable snack donations, including chips, crackers, cookies, microwavable single-serve meals, breakfast bars, or other light meal items. These rooms provide snacks, Internet access, television, showers, and laundry facilities at no charge to St. Louis and out-of-town families with a seriously-ill child being treated at local hospitals.

Many times, families do not leave the hospital for days and come into the Family Room to relax while grabbing something quick to eat. In 2000, more than 4,200 families used a Family Room. Ronald McDonald House Presents Heart and Sole Award to Gateway Distribution for Years of Support

Since the Ronald McDonald House opened in 1981, every month a truck driven by a Gateway Distribution employee, formerly PFD Supply, pulls up to the House and delivers a one-month supply of coffee, sugar, creamer, paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, and cleaning supplies. For going above and beyond to support Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis over the years, RMHC awarded Gateway Distribution with the 2009 “Heart and Sole Award.”

The “Heart and Sole Award” was created in 2005 to honor Coldwell Banker Gundaker in recognition of a more than 20-year commitment by the company’s nearly 3,000 agents to RMHC. Each year, RMHC honors a new company that emulates Coldwell Banker’s long-term commitment and generosity. Gateway Distribution co-owners Bill Dowling and Ali Seyedi accepted the award on behalf of the company.

“The Ronald McDonald House has been important to us since the first House in St. Louis opened in 1981. Winning this award is special to all of our employees because we know that offering families a place to stay together during a child’s illness helps in the healing process and lessens the burden on the family. It’s our way of giving back to our community and to share our blessings,” Dowling said.

Gateway Distribution also supports nearly every single RMHC special event and fundraiser by forming a team for the golf tournaments, purchasing a table at a dinner auction, and for several years, by hosting a Tiki Hut with extra fun for the golfers at the McDonald’s Scramble for Charity.

Several years ago, in addition to collecting tab tops at the company, Gateway Distribution also took on picking up all the tab tops collected at McDonald’s and hauls the tabs to Cash’s Scrap Metal for recycling. The Tab Top Program raises more than $15,000 for RMHC each year.

Most recently, Dowling joined the Capital Campaign Committee for the third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House and the 300th in the world to be open in September 2010. Dowling and Seyedi made a major gift pledge to the Capital Campaign as well.

“Gateway Distribution has been a tremendous friend to the Ronald McDonald House since we opened in 1981, and we are so very proud to recognize them with the 2009 Heart and Sole award,” RMHC President Dan Harbaugh said.

Gateway is the sole supply distributor to 315 McDonald’s restaurants in eastern Missouri, southern Illinois, and parts of Iowa and Kentucky.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Announces Four New Board Members, Honors Four Outgoing Members

Incoming RMHC Board Members: Mark Schlichter, Frank Kebe, Steve Pelch and Steve Lux

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis recently welcomed four new members to serve on its 2010 Board of Directors. The new board members include: Mark Schlichter, Senior Vice President of CSI Leasing, Inc.; Frank Kebe, Operations Vice President for McDonald’s Corporation; Stephen Lux, Assistant Treasurer at Ameren Corporation; and Steve Pelch, Vice President of Strategic Planning at Emerson.

Prior to being nominated to the Board of Directors, Schlichter served on the McDonald’s Scramble for Charity committee and coordinated an employee fundraiser for RMHC for the past 10 years. While relatively new to RMHC of Metro St. Louis, Kebe was previously extremely involved with the Ronald McDonald House in Chicago. Lux currently serves on the Audit Committee and Investment Subcommittee, which he has chaired for the past three years. He also serves on the Audit Committee. Pelch originally served on the Strategic Planning Committee and now serves on the Development Committee.

RMHC is also proud to recognize and honor four outgoing board members for their dedication to RMHC over the years. Outgoing Board Members are: Kris Schuster, Managing Director of CBIZ Human Capital Services; Jacque Phillips, Owner of Accu-Care Home Nurses, Inc.; John Meara, President and CIO of Argent Capital; and Tammie Meyer, Field Service Manager for McDonald’s.

During her nine years on the RMHC Board of Directors, Schuster served as Chair for the Human Resources Committee for six years, and has served on the committee for all nine. She also has been part of the Strategic Planning Committee. A board member for six years, Phillips serves as Chair of the Grant Review Committee, and also on the Friends of Ronald, Human Resources, and Executive Committees.

Meara serves as the Chair of the Development Committee, serves on the Finance and Executive Committees, and serves on the Investment Subcommittee. Meyer serves on the Grant and Program Committees and most recently on the Groundbreaking Committee for the third St. Louis Ronald McDonald House and 300th in the world, set to open in September of 2010. She also volunteers in the Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. John’s Mercy Children’s Hospital and served on the board for six years.

Ronald McDonald House Families Shop Free of Charge at McGift Shoppe

One of the many families who donated gifts to the McGift Shoppe

Ronald McDonald House families' holiday will be a little brighter this year because of the McGift Shoppe, a holiday store open for RMH families to shop free of charge for one another. Families who stay at the house at the holidays are often unable to travel home to be near family and friends.

In addition to all the wonderful holiday meals the volunteers cook, the warm beds to sleep in and even visits from Santa Claus, families are able to shop in this store as well.

Thank you to everyone who donated to the McGift Shoppe and all the volunteers who helped wrap presents and stock the shop.

Ronald McDonald House Breaks Ground on Third St. Louis House

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis is proud to announce the groundbreaking of its third Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis and the 300th House in the world!

The new 20 room House will enable us to serve more than 700 more families per year! Thank you to all our generous sponsors who made groundbreaking possible. A big thank you to St. John's Mercy and the St. Louis McDonald's Co-Op for lead gifts.

Ronald led the group to the groundbreaking and guests were asked to "Mark the Moment" by placing a painted thumbprint on a piece of tile to be used in a later project for the House.

Chasing Chaice

Family Story: Chaice
Two-year-old Chaice has a name that reflects his personality. Finally on his way home from a combined stay of nearly ten months at the Ronald McDonald House, Chaice’s mom says with his health improving he can continue living up to his name by keeping his mom active “chasing after Chaice”!
The day Chaice was born; he was flown to the hospital from his home near Carbondale, Missouri which is about two and half hours from St. Louis. Chaice was in and out of the hospital since the day he was born and near losing his life.
Chaice faced many health challenges head on. At just two months old, Chaice had a kidney removed and then contracted staph infection. During the next couple of months, Chaice had his second kidney removed. At this point, Chaice’s mom knew that he was her little warrior here to stay. Even after all Chaice has been through at such a young age, along with his gall bladder rupturing, Chaice continues to live up to his name with a smile.
Throughout both of Chaice’s stays at the Ronald McDonald House, he enjoyed greeting the RMH staff with his friendly personality and beaming smile which couldn’t help but make everyone else smile too!
Chaice’s mom and dad are thankful for their “home-away-from-home” at the Ronald McDonald House. Chaice’s mom, Brandi, does not know how she and her husband would have gotten through Chaice’s hospital visits without being so close to him by staying at the Ronald McDonald House. With the family’s abrupt move to St. Louis, Chaice’s parents were thinking, “What are we going to do?” Their whole life was at home, two hours away and they felt as if they had nothing. That is until the Ronald McDonald House became their “home-away-from-home”.
Chaice’s parents are so grateful for the Ronald McDonald House and all the staff who have made the House a wonderful home for their family. Not only was Brandi thankful to be so close to the hospital, but Chaice’s grandparents also came to stay at the Ronald McDonald House making the family’s “home-away-from-home” even more like home.

Coming Soon: Ronald McDonald House in West County

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis is proud to announce the groundbreaking of our third Ronald McDonald House on the campus of St. John's Mercy Children's Hospital November 20, 2009. This House will allow us to serve more than 700 families per year who travel to West Count hospitals in St. Louis to recieve treatment for their seriously-ill child.

While funds are still needed to complete the project, groundbreaking on the new $4.5 million West County Ronald McDonald House was made possible by lead gifts from St. John's Mercy and the St. Louis McDonald's Co-Op and other generous contributors. The project is contracted by Kadean Construction, designed by Gray Design Group, and financed through UMB. Other major donors include Prairie Farms Dairy, Anheuser-Busch, Inc., Mississippi Lim, Co., and UMB.

The RMHC team is busy planning for the groundbreaking and spreading the word. St. Louis Homes and Lifestlyes is helping the House by spreading the word through their blog and social media. Coldwell Banker Gundaker Auction Raises More than $80,000 for Ronald McDonald House

Coldwell Banker Gundaker hosted the 24th Annual Coldwell Banker Gundaker Auction October 20, 2009, at the Machinist Hall in Bridgeton, raising more than $80,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis. Each of the CBG offices also raises money to Sponsor-A-Family at RMHC in addition to purchasing live and silent auction items the day of the auction.

A note from Barry-Wehmiller employees after cooking dinner for Ronald McDonald House families...

On October 26th, several members and friends of the Barry-Wehmiller Community Development Team gathered at the Ronald McDonald House near Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital to provide a home-cooked meal for the 40-plus family members who call this residence “home” while coping with serious medical situations affecting their children.

One of our new friends from that night is 5-year-old James, who will soon begin chemotherapy for brain cancer. His young mother will be with him in St. Louis until mid-December when his treatment is concluded. She has three other children under the age of 5, including a 6-month-old infant, who are home with family in Poplar Bluff.

James and the other individuals we met truly touched our hearts and reminded us always to be thankful for our blessings. We look forward to many more opportunities to support this outstanding organization!

Mother Shares Her Appreciation for Ronald McDonald House

My daughter is 19-months-old and has suffered two brain hemorrhages--the first being in April of 2009. She recovered fine and no diagnosis was ever made and it was thought to be a once in a lifetime chance that it would reoccur.

Then, our worst fears came true on July 22, 2009, when she was rushed to the hospital after throwing up and rubbing her head and eyes, we knew something just wasn’t right!

Although she is talking, smiling, and laughing she was hit harder this time and can no longer walk or even sit up by herself! No definite diagnosis has been found as of yet.

Being a young mother I never thought anything like this could ever happen to my family! Staying at the Ronald McDonald House has been a blessing and has enabled my family to get a break from the hospital and to feel like we have somewhat of a normal life.

I know from my experience that there are still great people left in the world and words cannot express how much we appreciate the volunteers who greet us every day and the meals that are brought are wonderful! The Ronald McDonald House has taken a tremendous weight off our shoulders and thank you is just not enough!

Kids and Clays Tournament Huge Success for Ronald McDonald House Families

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 9th Annual Kids and Clays Shooting Tournament and dinner auction August 28 and 29. Thanks to you we raised more than $250,000 to help provide a "home-away-from-home" for families of seriously ill children.

Guests enjoyed a fabulous dinner at Scottrade Friday evening complete with exciting live and silent auction items and fun raffle side games.

On Saturday, participants each shot 100 targets a piece and tested their skill at various side games at beautiful Nilo Farms in Alton!

Golfer Wins Jaguar XF After Shooting Hole in One at Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament

St. Louis resident Thurman Brooks shot a hole-in-one winning him a 2009 Jaguar XF at the Colliers Turley Martin Tucker/Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament at Forest Hills Country Club August 10. The Hole-in-One Contest was sponsored by Moore Automotive and the Jaguar is valued at more than $48,000!

Brooks played on the Coca-Cola team and is employed by National City Bank.

Kids and Clays Tournament to Benefit Ronald McDonald House

The St. Louis Ronald McDonald House will hold its 9th Annual Kids and Clays Sporting Clays Tournament at the spectacular Nilo Farms in Alton, IL. This event will consist of 3 flights with 100 targets per participant.

We will have 4 classes, with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each class, as well as a sub-junior division (under age 14), junior division (ages 14-17), ladies division and corporate team challenge. There will be additional shooting side games as well.

Additionally, on the Friday evening before the tournament, we will hold an exciting dinner auction for participants and their guests.

The event is limited to 270 participants and will include breakfast and lunch and beverages throughout the day with an awards ceremony at the conclusion of the event.

Nilo Farms is a beautiful facility of 650 acres of rolling hills including oak-hickory woodlands and sub-marginal agricultural land. It is also the former home of the famous King Buck Retriever.

Couple Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary at Ronald McDonald House

On July 8, Rick and Janet Hemphill celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary at the Park Avenue House, serving cake to families, volunteers, and staff.

The couple met 10 years ago at the House while participating in the dinner program. The couple married a few months later at the House, in honor of their first meeting.

Summer's Story

Just days before her 11th birthday, Summer Swadley of Aurora, Mo had an excruciating headache. Her mother Linda rushed her to the hospital where doctors found she needed fluid drained to relieve the enormous pressure on her brain.

Summer was transferred to a hospital in Springfield, MO where doctors drained the fluid. However, they discovered the pressure was actually a result of a brain tumor. A jet from St. Louis Children’s Hospital flew Summer and her mother from Springfield to St. Louis for surgery.

Four days later, on her 11th birthday in September 29 of 2003, Summer underwent surgery for her first brain tumor.

After the first surgery in September, doctors found another tumor, so Summer underwent another surgery in October of 2003. These surgeries had several severe side effects such as weight loss, double vision, and loss of motor skills. At age 11 Summer weighed only 60 pounds and had to re-learn how to walk, write, and draw.

After a long recovery, another tumor appeared in January of 2005, again in February of 2007, and yet again in March of this year. The rare type of tumor, called pilocytic myxoid astrocytoma, is like a hand where surgery can remove the palm but the fingers remain and even grow. Summer stayed in St. Louis for seven weeks this summer undergoing radiation treatment to kill the leftover “finger” parts of the tumor.

Throughout Summer’s five surgeries, aggressive treatment, and numerous check-ups, the Swadley family has found a “home-away-from-home” at the Ronald McDonald House. The family appreciates the House’s proximity to the hospital, its safety and security, and especially the camaraderie the Swadley’s have found with the other families staying at the House.

While at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the Swadley’s also used the Ronald McDonald Family Room. Linda loved using the Family Room to do a load of laundry, grab a snack, or just relax for a minute away from the stress of the hospital.

The Swadley’s most recent stay lasted seven weeks while Summer underwent radiation treatment. During this time Linda decided to give back by crocheting baby blankets to give to other families staying at the Ronald McDonald House and at various hospitals.

They have also started collecting tab tops to donate to the House. The family has already brought two car loads full of tab tops from their hometown about four hours south of St. Louis.

On June 24, Summer and her mother returned home to Aurora, anxious to get back to their everyday lives, which includes taking care of Summer’s six siblings, two nieces and two nephews, taking in foster children, and running an in-home daycare.

Summer and her family will return to Children’s Hospital and to the Ronald McDonald House in August for several tests. Then doctors will decide the next step in treatment. The family is hoping to avoid chemotherapy and its harsh side effects so Summer can return to school in the fall to start her Junior year of high school with all her friends.

CTMT/RMH Golf Tournament Rescheduled--Still Time to Sign Up!

The 24th Annual Colliers Turley Martin Tucker/Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament has been rescheduled for August 10 after the initial date of June 15 was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Teams are still available, as well as hole sponsorships, and the chance to Sponsor-A-Family at the Ronald McDonald House.

Companies can sponsor a hole for $350 and you can Sponsor-A-Family’s stay at the House for as little at $35 for a week. Families are only asked to pay $5 per night and no one is ever turned away for inability to pay.

The golf tournament begins on Monday, August 10, at 7 a.m. At the end of the day, a first-place trophy is given out and a chip-off is held with $3,000 in guaranteed prize money. Moore Automotive is also sponsoring four Hole-In-One contests with $10,000, a Jaguar XF, and a 2009 Nissan Altima up for grabs.

Kyle Heads to the Ronald McDonald House After Three Year Stay at Cardinal Glennon

After spending his entire life at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital waiting for a kidney transplant, 3-year-old Kyle received his new kidneys and will join his mother at the Ronald McDonald House.

His family has stayed at the Ronald McDonald House more than 20 times when they traveled from Jefferson City to St. Louis to see Kyle and wait for his transplant date.

Born 10 weeks premature, Eduardo faced multiple health issues immediately including pneumonia and a hole in his heart.

At only 2-years-old, Eduardo received a double-lung transplant and his family has stayed at the Ronald McDonald House more than twenty times during the course of his surgery, treatment, and recovery.

Rounds of steroids caused 8-year-old Eduardo to be the same height as his 4-year-old sister, Valeria. He also lost his hearing due to the anti-rejection medications and stopping breathing once.

The family finds comfort in the meals the dinner groups cook every night and meeting so many families who also have a seriously ill child at the hospital.

“You miss home but you still feel like you are home,” Sylvia said with a smile.

Grandmother Thanks Ronald McDonald House for Place to Stay While Her Grandson Receives Treatment

My grandson Gavin was born in St Louis on May 28, 2009 weighing 4lbs 5oz and 16 and a half inches long. They diagnosed him with Achondroplasia...Dwarfism.

At first we all thought he would go home on Monday when his Mommy got released...as long as he did what he was suppose to. Well that didn't work out.

As it stands he might be in the NICU for a total of 2 weeks. He is in there still today as I write this story. The first night we arrived we stayed with my son in a motel that gave him a "hospital rate" that was just short of a hundred bucks...per night.

Luckily a HR lady called and put my son and his wife on a list for the RMH. The next morning they got in. My son had to go back to Illinois for work so I stayed with Amber as my son left taking my husband with him.

When we got there the volunteers were so nice and the house was just immaculate. And to find out it was only going to be $5 a night !!! WOW!!! What a blessing. If it weren't for the RMH I dont know what my son would of done to stay close to baby Gavin. As any Mom out there would Amber is not leaving St. Louis without him.

I thank the RMH for everything they have done for my family and I have and will continue to donate to the RMH.

She Never Dreamed of Using the Ronald McDonald House

After years of helping the Ronald McDonald House families, Katie Thorman never dreamed her own family would find a “home-away-from-home” at a Ronald McDonald House.

Katie’s granddaughter Claire was diagnosed with an immune deficiency disease in April 2008. Doctors at St. Louis Children’s Hospital determined that Claire needed a bone marrow transplant and transferred her to a hospital in Durham, North Carolina, a long trip taking the family 800 miles away from home.

In North Carolina the family found a “home-away-from-home” at the Ronald McDonald House in Durham while Claire underwent treatment.

They appreciated having a safe place to stay, food to eat, and other families to lend support. Katie said meeting other families who were experiencing the same things with their children was a huge help in her family’s time of struggle.

Luckily Claire’s mother, Amy, was a match and Claire received a bone marrow transplant from her in North Carolina. However, doctors soon discovered Claire’s thymus gland was underdeveloped, and she had lesions on her brain causing muscle weakness and a slight crossing of her eyes.

Just recently, Claire and Amy arrived home in St. Louis where doctors at St. Louis Children’s Hospital will continue to monitor Claire’s health and the progress of the bone marrow transplant as she regains t-cell function.

Two weeks after returning home, the family received a surprising phone call from the transplant coordinator at Duke who asked them to return for Claire to receive a booster bone marrow transplant using her father’s stem cells because Claire’s latest t-cell studies showed little improvement. The family hopes that with the booster, Claire will be able to gain T-cell function before her second birthday.

While Claire receives treatment at St. Louis Children’s Hospital her family will spend time in the hospital’s Ronald McDonald Family Room. Claire’s family can use the Family Room to rest, watch television, grab a snack, do laundry or take a hot shower.

The Room also provides a safe place for Amy and John to take Claire’s brother, Colin, when procedures needed to be done on Claire. Cups of hot coffee and cookies baked by volunteers also help to lift the family’s spirits.

Katie has served on the Board of Director for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Metro St. Louis as well as on the committee for the Colliers Tucker Martin Turley/RMH Golf Tournament.

Zellah's Red Wagon

A little girl who stayed at the Ronald McDonald House while she awaited a new set of lungs passed away yesterday. She left in mid-February, removed from the transplant list, with hopes of returning to a normal childhood.

You see, everywhere Zellah went an oxygen tank nearly her height followed her. One day, our assistant House manager at Park Avenue sent out a Facebook message asking for a little red wagon for Zellah to sit in with her oxygen tank. By the end of the week, several generous people had sent in wagons for Zellah to choose from.

Then, as the holidays approached and hundreds of gifts for our children poured through the doors, Zellah carried her Hannah Montana dolls, microphone, and piles of other toys around in the wagon.

Zellah hosted the best tea parties with her tea set she picked out from our McGift Shoppe and invited anyone who could come and offered to play UNO with anyone who had fifteen minutes and a smile to spare.

Yesterday Zellah's heart stopped, and she is the newest 7-year-old angel. I can't make sense of why she had to go, but she will never be forgotten.

Third Chance at Life

Derek was born with an underdeveloped left heart ventricle and had his first heart transplant at four and a half weeks old.

For the next 13 years, Derek was a normal boy, playing baseball, going to school and hanging out with friends.

Then, during a routine check-up, doctors discovered Derek had coronary artery disease and would need a second heart transplant.

After a two month stay at the Ronald McDonald House, Derek received his second heart and is doing very well!

Without the Ronald McDonald House, Derek and his family would have had to drive back and forth from Cuba, MO, or stay in costly hotel rooms.

Southwest Airlines STL Shares the Spirit with Ronald McDonald House

On Thursday, May 21, Southwest Airlines hosted a barbecue fund raiser for the Ronald McDonald House in St. Louis at Lambert East Terminal.

Logan's Story

We live in Quincy, IL (about 2 1/2 hours from Children's & Barnes). At 31 weeks into my pregnancy, I developed preeclampsia and was sent to Barnes for monitoring and/or delivery.

Luckily they kept me pregnant until 33 weeks, when they delivered our son, Logan, weighing only 3 lbs 7 oz. He had to be at Barnes for 4 weeks before coming home.

He was fine, considering, but didn't know how to suck and swallow and couldn't hold his own body temperature. We waited a week before we got a room at the West Pine location.

Boy was that a life saver compared to the hotel we were staying in!

Going home without our new baby was not an option for us. We were so close to the hospital and we got to know some of the other families and hear their stories and that made us even more grateful that Logan wasn't dealing with worse issues.

We still talk about how great the Ronald McDonald house was in our time of need and anytime we can we try to help by sponsoring a family for a week. Anytime we donate from here on out will go to either the Ronald McDonald house or to Children's Hospital!

Interview Gives Ronald McDonald House Chairman of Board Perspective

On April 13, KSDK interviewed 7-year-old cancer survivor and tab top collector Brandon Scott.

Watch the full interview, then read how the interview helped give our Chairman of the Board perspective on life.

The KSDK interview was taped the Monday morning after Easter. If you remember, it was gloomy out and so was I. I had to drive downtown, I was tired, my cell phone was going nuts, I couldn’t find a place to park, and I was having a little pity party.

I basically robbed myself of the joy one should receive when helping those less fortunate.

As I walked into the KSDK studio I met the Scott family from Poplar Bluff, MO. They were so happy to be there. You see, the Scott family has spent a lot of time in St. Louis, but most of it has been in Children’s Hospital.

Brandon has fought cancer since he was 2-years-old. He has a huge scar going up the back of his head, and an even bigger smile that goes across the front of his face.

They are so happy that he has been in remission for a year, and they are so grateful for being able to stay in the Ronald McDonald House as a family when they have been in St. Louis.

Brandon is the champion tab top collector as you will see on the video. This year he has collected over 1,000 pounds. It’s his way of giving back and saying thanks. He canvasses the entire community collecting every tab top he can.

When I left the interview I realized once again that my problems are miniscule compared to others and thanked God for my blessings.

Hopefully this will brighten your day. If it doesn’t, perhaps this last part of the story will.

When we came on the set Brandon kept sniffling. Rebecca Wu was the anchor and she is very nice, but she did ask Brandon if he would like to blow his nose before we went on the air.

Brandon, being 7-years-old, looked her right in the eye and said, “Nah, I do this all the time. I have cancer and it’s from the chemo”. I actually felt sorry for Ms. Wu as she was just saying what any adult would. To Brandon it’s just a runny nose, and he can definitely deal with the sniffling!

ISC Contracting Lends A Hand at Annual Service Day

Just in time for spring cleaning and spring spruce-ups, which every Home needs, the Ronald McDonald House of Metro St. Louis welcomed a donation of time, talent and supplies by ISC Contracting April 18, 2009.

ISC brought their employees, employees’ families, and some of their suppliers to do much-needed service projects such as painting, plumbing, landscaping and multiple repairs to The Ronald McDonald House.

This marks the 10th year that ISC and their employees have donated this day to the House.

Spring is in the air

We’ve all heard the old adage “April showers bring May flowers”. Granted, we haven’t had nearly as many showers this year as we did last year, but the flowers are starting to peek out already. Spring is definitely “springing”!

Before I started working at the Ronald McDonald House, I didn’t realize how lucky my family is. Next Saturday, my only nephew will be 12 years old. We are so fortunate, because not only is he an amazingly good kid, he’s also been extremely blessed with good health. In this perfect spring weather, he can run (he just made the junior high traveling track team as a 6th grader, not that I’m an overly proud aunt who likes to brag about him or anything like that!), attend a Cardinals' game with his doting aunt, or just jump on his bike and ride it wherever he wants.

The worries he has are nothing compared to the worries that the children and their families who call the Ronald McDonald House “home” have. Many of those kids can’t leave their hospital room, much less play catch outside, sit in the sunshine and enjoy the perfect weather like we have today, or just play on the playground.

Every night, regardless of how wonderful the weather is, the Ronald McDonald House provides a “home-away-from-home” for 39 children and their families. As we all know, the economy isn’t great right now, but there are many other ways besides financially that you can help us help them. Intern Sees Value of Ronald McDonald House During Time With Charity

A few semesters ago, I attended a PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America) meeting at Webster University. I rarely go to these things, but the flyer caught my eye. The speaker was going to be talking about non-profit organizations, something that piqued my interest.

So I went. My head was filled with notions of working in a small non-profit charity for either children, or battered women. I nursed those ideas for a while, and when it came time for me to find an internship, I went to the internship expo with the express purpose of seeking out the Ronald McDonald House and landing an interview.

That’s exactly what I did.

That day, I met Mandy Tipton (a Webster Alumni), whose office I now work in. We hit it off right from the start, and she offered me an interview for the next week.

I’ve been here nearly four months now, and though I’m not here every day, I can easily see why the House is so important to the families of seriously-ill children. I see volunteers spending their time stuffing envelopes with letters asking businesses for their help in raising funds.

I see the food that is nightly cooked by more volunteers, so that the families staying here can have a home-cooked meal. I took a tour of the Family Room at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, a welcome respite for families needing to spend much of their time there.

I’ve also seen Zellah. She is a bright-eyed, seven-year-old girl, with an impish grin and a rare lung-disease. When I first met Zellah, at the beginning of the year, she had to drag her oxygen tank with her everywhere she went. It didn’t seem to bother her much though. She was happy just to be able to walk around and say hello to everyone in the House.

Months ago, when she first came to St. Louis, her prognosis was not good. She was given about 18 months to live, and was put on a transplant list. She has been living at the house since then, and going in for treatment at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. As of today, she is off her oxygen tank and is now home in Colorado with her family.

This is the kind of success story that the very existence of the Ronald McDonald House makes possible. The families staying here would find it very difficult to move their children close to the top notch pediatric hospitals that reside in large cities.

It is because of the efforts of the wonderful staff here that these families have a safe, clean, and comfortable place to stay while their child is in treatment.

I have met and interviewed several other families with stories as touching as Zellah’s. It has been a privilege to speak with these families, and to have them share their stories.

Though my internship is nearing its end, I consider myself fortunate to have been a part of all this. With any luck, this internship will set me up for a lifetime career helping others.

Volunteers Answer Phones and Take Donations at KSHE Request-A-Thon

Volunteers from Gannon Properties lent a hand and an ear at the annual KSHE Request-A-Thon all day April 10. Volunteers answered phones and took requests and donations.

KSHE DJs interviewed three families and Chairman of the Board Phil Brown to paint a picture for listeners of the importance of the Ronald McDonald House.

Six-year-old Carson Brown and his mother, Vicky, shared Carson's story of staying at the Ronald McDonald House while Carson undergoes treatment for recurring brain cancer.
